The San Luis Obispo county Air Pollution Control District is asking that a section of the Oceano Dunes be closed to off-road vehicles.
They want to close off an area that allegedly causes the most dust pollution.
Larry Allen is director of the APCD. He made the request at a hearing that began yesterday. The hearing to determine if the State Department of Parks and Recreation is in violation of the state health and safety code.
The issue, is dust from the dunes a public nuisance. Particularly for people who bought expensive homes in new developments on the Nipomo Mesa. They blame the off-roaders for particulates that are impacting their health.
Coincidentally, Larry Allen is retiring. This is his last week as APCD director. Although it’s not official, Gary Willie is expected to take over as director. Willie is a Cal Poly graduate who has been with the APCD for several decades. Willie is an exceptional triathlete.
