An Atascadero man sentenced to life in prison yesterday for attacking a 22-year-old Cal Poly student.
27-year-old Derrick Moore pleaded no contest in March to enhanced charges of first-degree burglary and assault with intent to commit rape.
In the courtroom yesterday, the student described how Moore assaulted her and how she fought back with a keychain pocketknife, repeatedly stabbing Moore.
She says she still has scars on her hands from the lacerations the pocketknife left when it closed on her while she was trying to defend herself.
After her Testimony, Judge Jacquelyn Duffy sentenced Moore to life in prison. He will be eligible for parole after 38 years.
Moore apologized to the victim and his family.
Prosecutors said Moore tracked down the woman using “information of female clients he obtained from the tire store where he had worked, including names and addresses. He had made eye contact with her at her address on two previous occasions before he assaulted her.”
