A ribbon cutting yesterday at Fort Hunter Ligget for the new $64 million dollar Operational Readiness Training Complex. Base officials also held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Track and Sports Field. Among those to attend, Congressman Jimmy Panetta, senior military officials and US Army World Class Athlete, Major Dan Browne. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Major Brown became the first cadet/athlete at West Point to run under four minutes in the mile.
He now runs for the World Class Athletes Program for the US Army and trains with Alberto Salazar at Nike, Beaverton. The ORTC increases Fort Hunter Liggett’s training capacity and provides a safe and modern facility to train about 800 transient soldiers. Congressman Jimmy Panetta said in light of the increase in international terrorism, particularly from ISIS, the training complex will compliment the Army’s readiness.
Congressman Jimmy Panetta is the son of former Congressman Leon Panetta, who represented San Luis Obispo County in the late 70’s. He also served as Defense Secretary during the Obama Administration. Congressman Jimmy Panetta graduated from Santa Clara Law School and served in the US Naval Reserves.
