In San Francisco, the Kate Steinle murder trial continues.
Yesterday, a retired police investigator testifies that the bullet that killed the 32-year-old Cal Poly graduate ricocheted off the ground about 100 feet away before striking Steinle in the back. The weapon was fired by Garcia Zarate, an illegal alien who has seven felony convictions. He was deported back to Mexico five times. Zarate had been released from the San Francisco jail before the shooting, despite a request by federal immigration authorities to hold him for another deportation procedure.
Zarate claims that he picked up something wrapped in a shirt, not knowing it was a gun, and the gun went off. Previously, he told officials that he was shooting at a seal lion.
The incident occurred at a popular pier in San Francisco where Kate Steinle was walking with her dad.
