Another sad note today. Alex Spanos has died. The Cal Poly alum was born to Greek immigrants in 1923. He majored in aerospace engineering at Cal Poly in the early 40’s, but dropped out to enlist in the US army air corps.
After the war he became a contractor, and made millions in construction and real estate. In 1984, he bought the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers moved to Los Angeles in 2017.
In 2004, he donated $8 million dollars to Cal Poly for the new football stadium. He also donated $1.5 million to help fund the renovation of the Cal Poly theater. Both the football stadium and the theater are named after Spanos.
Spanos was awarded an honorary doctorate from Cal Poly in 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 70 years, Faye, who died in August at the age of 92.
