Staffers at Atascadero State Hospital say about 80 patients have no easy access to toilets and drinking water. They say this has continued for nine days, and that it’s creating increasingly unsanitary conditions at the hospital.
One staffer tells the Tribune, “conditions are slowly turning into Lord of the Flies.”
State officials says a contractor is working to repair a sewer line at the hospital. The affected area contains male patients who are facing criminal charges and have been declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. 77 patients are affected in two units at the hospitals.
