The city of Atascadero will hold a public hearing in its meeting next week for amending the definition of “hotels” and “motels” in its municipal code.
The city says that currently the definition limits hotels and motels to have no more than 25% of their units equipped with kitchens. The city has received an application from the owner of 3600 El Camino Real with a request to remove this restriction from the municipal code.
The agenda packet says that hotels are now competing with a growing trend towards longer stays and Airbnb rentals, and allowing this change in the ordinance will provide more alternatives to private Airbnb’s.
The proposed change in the municipal code is to allow hotels and motels to have kitchens in individual rooms in up to 50% of the total rooms and units, with at least 20 rooms in total.
The city council will consider whether to adopt the changes or amend them in its regular meeting on Tuesday, November 14th.
