The California Highway Patrol is warning the public of a recent phone scam occurring across California.
CHP says the perpetrators present themselves as Amber Alert representatives, offering to register children for the alert. They ask for confidential information, “and to meet at your home,” CHP says.
CHP representatives say this is not how the Amber Alert system works. The Amber Alert is only activated by law enforcement agencies when investigating reports of an abducted or missing child.
CHP’s release advises members of the public to never provide personal information or to answer calls from an unknown or ‘possible scam’ numbers.
