This is the season for high school graduation.
Yesterday, Atascadero and Shandon each held commencement exercises. Valedictorian Franko Jira told attendees that “Real life can be scary, but we’re not alone and we haven’t been alone.” Franko is attending Harvard university in the fall. Other students are attending Cal Poly, UCLA, Colorado State, UC Davis, San Jose State, Chico State, Cuesta College, and the college described by some as the Harvard of the south… East Tennessee State University.
At Shandon, nineteen high school students graduated yesterday. Superintendent Teresa Taylor says the class of 2018 set records for scholarships. She said she’s very proud of the class. Blanca Soto and Luis Flores Qere co-valedictorians. Eighteen students plan to attend Cuesta College in the fall.
Superintendent and principal Teresa Taylor is retiring. Kristina Benson, the principal at Templeton middle school, will take over as principal. Her contract will be presented to the Shandon school board next Tuesday. She graduated from Cal Poly and is completing her doctorate at Cal Lutheran University. Benson has a strong personnel background and served as a local representative for the association of California school administrators. She was selected after trustees interviewed six of nearly two dozen candidates.
Teresa Taylor says she has not yet made up her mind about her retirement. She’s retiring after a long successful career in education.
