On Christmas Eve, a man passed away attempting to save his daughter at Carmel River State Beach in Carmel. Around noon on Christmas Eve, Monterey County Area Emergency Resources responded to a report of a father and daughter struggling off shore.
A man and his 12-year-old daughter were at Carmel Beach when a raft she was on started to get swept out to sea. According to rescuers, the father was able to save his daughter, but then became caught in the current.
Rescuers were able to locate, rescue and transport the daughter by ambulance to a hospital on the Monterey Peninsula. Officials say she was suffering from apparent hypothermia.
The father was spotted by a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and brought to shore by fire boat. He was transported to the same hospital, but he died from his injuries.
