After declining in recent year, the Monarch butterfly count jumps to 250 thousand in the most recent count.
The Xerces Society counts the butterflies over Thanksgiving. They counted 247,237 Monarch butterflies in 2021. That’s up from fewer than 2,000 Monarchs the year before.
The second largest population in the state is the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove. Thousands of Monarchs visit the eucalyptus trees off highway one in Grover Beach.
Besides providing natural beauty, the Monarchs pollinate flowers and plants in California on their way to remote Mexico to reproduce.
