The US Coast Guard rescued three people and a cat from a sail boat that was sinking off Piedras Blancas.
The Bella Gina was taking on water about six nautical miles off shore, so the coast guard dispatched a helicopter from Point Mugu and a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Morro Bay. The lifeboat and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter arrived about the same time. The lifeboat attempted to tow the boat, but seas of 12 to 14 feet prevented the coast guard from doing it safely.
The helicopter crew flew the three people and their black-and-white cat to the Paso Robles airport. The sailors have not been identified, although a website named the cat. She’s Tili, and she’s reportedly doing fine.
The Bella Gina sailed into Morro Bay last year after experiencing mechanical troubles with their boat. The coast guard has not released the status of the boat, The Bella Gina.
