On the coast, the Cayucos Veterans Hall is closed because of safety concerns. Part of it has been closed since 2016.
The building dates back to 1872 when it was the Cass warehouse at Cayucos Landing.
Captain James Cass built the store, the lumberyard, wharf and pier. He also built the home in which he lived, which is now a popular spot for parties and destination weddings.
Cass was a creative entrepreneur who experimented with fruits and vegetables in Cayucos after making a fortune serving the needs of miners during the gold rush.
The future of that one hundred year old veterans hall building at the base of the pier is undecided.
