A 15-year-old Paso Robles high school student was killed in a solo vehicle crash on Sunday evening in rural San Luis Obispo county.
CHP says officers responded to a report of a solo vehicle collision at about 9:59 pm on El Pomar drive, just west of Vaquero road. Officers determined 18-year-old Jonathan Sanchez of Paso Robles was driving his vehicle westbound on El Pomar drive at an unknown speed. For unknown reasons, he veered off the roadway’s north edge, and subsequently crashed into a tree.
The 15-year-old student, identified by Paso Robles high school’s principal as Bently Schmitz in a letter sent to families on Monday morning, was ejected from the vehicle, and succumbed to his injuries. Drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected to have been a factor in the crash.
CHP is continuing to investigate the collision.
