GWSS Detection Update_2026_08_12
The county department of agriculture/weights and measures completed a survey after detecting a single glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) in a local nursery.
GWSS is an invasive insect that feeds on the fluids of many plant species, and poses a serious threat to agriculture as it can spread bacteria that cases Pierce’s disease, a fatal grapevine disease that threatens vineyards. The department received a report of a single GWSS, and deployed staff on August 4th to the detection site. After completing a survey, they did not find any additional GWSS or evidence of an established population.
The department is asking residents to remain alert and report any suspected GWSS, as early detection and rapid response is critical to limiting the pest’s spread and protecting the county’s agricultural economy.
