
Atascadero city councilmember, Heather Newsom, has officially announced she will run for California state senate district 17 in 2028.
Newsom’s private sector experience includes more than 22 years in accounting, where she helps individuals and small business owners navigate financial planning, regulation, and growth. She was first elected to the Atascadero city council in 2018, re-elected in 2022, and served as mayor pro-tem. She has also served on key regional boards handling transit, local government coordination, and finance.
Newsom said “our communities are facing complex challenges, from the rising cost of living to the burdens placed on our local employers and working families.”
