The San Luis Obispo county air pollution control district announced that a northern Chumash tribe will be conducting a cultural burn next week, and will take place at the Johnson Ranch open space just south of San Luis Obispo.
Cultural burns are conducted with support from Cal Fire San Luis Obispo, and various other fire agencies. They are controlled, smaller burns led by indigenous fire practitioners for the purpose of revitalizing plants and reducing wildfire risk. They are an important tool to minimize fire hazards and the likelihood of uncontrolled wildfires, according to the county APCD. Smoke will be present on the day of the prescribed burn.
The exact date of the burn is dependent on weather conditions.
