The California department of agriculture, in collaboration with the county’s department of agriculture/weights and measures, is responding to the detection of an Asian citrus psyllid in the county.
An adult Asian citrus psyllid, or ACP, was recently detected in an insect trap in Los Osos. The two departments are conducting high-density trapping, visual survey, and treatment around the site to determine whether additional ACP are present, and reduce the risk of the pest spreading. Residents in the area of Los Osos may see county and state agricultural agents conducting these operations.
ACPs are a serious threat to California citrus because they can spread hlb, also known as citrus greening disease. While they are harmless to humans and pets, hlb is an incurable plant disease that is fatal to citrus trees.
