The Paso Robles school board discussed its board policy updates from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) last night.
CSBA updates board policies to ensure they remain compliant with state and federal laws, and are routine items. During last night’s meeting, however, trustee Kenney Enney wanted to pull three sections of the updated policy, out of concern they were not in compliance with Mirabelli v. Bonta, or sending out a notification to parents of this change in policy.
The court case was filed in 2023 against California’s policies that prohibit schools from disclosing transgender or gender-nonconforming students to their parents. The supreme court ruled in favor of the parent plaintiffs, prohibiting schools from withholding this information. Superintendent Loftus pushed back, saying staff have already received training on this ruling, and that they should await further updates from the CSBA on this ruling. The updates passed 5 – 1.
