PG&E is proposing to underground 500 miles of powerlines on the central coast, as part of its larger 10-year electrical undergrounding plan for 5,000 miles of electric distribution lines in high fire-risk areas.
PG&E has filed the proposal with the California office of energy infrastructure safety, outlining a long-term risk-based strategy to improve safety and reliability across northern and central California. PG&E estimates completing 5,000 miles of undergrounding will save customers approximately $6 billion in vegetation management, operations, and maintenance costs over the life of these assets. 91 miles of power lines are proposed to be undergrounded in San Luis Obispo county.
Undergrounding power lines, according to PG&E, can reduce ignition risk by nearly 98%, and improve reliability with 90% fewer outages.
