Governor Gavin Newsom said he will leave the possible extension of Diablo Canyon’s operations past 2030 to the next governor.
The operating license for Diablo Canyon has already been approved through 2029 and 2030, but PG&E is advocating for an extension through 2045. A law has not gone through the legislature yet to allow these continued operations, and Newsom announced that he does not plan to take action before his term ends.
Senator John Laird released a statement yesterday responding to Newsom’s announcement, saying: “There simply is not enough time for the legislature to thoughtfully address the many important questions surrounding Diablo Canyon’s future,” with just three weeks remaining in the legislature. “I look forward to having the opportunity in 2027, over a full nine-month legislative session, to thoughtfully consider Diablo Canyon’s future,” he said, agreeing with Newsom’s action.
