The county of San Luis Obispo’s behavioral health department will be holding its overdose awareness day this Saturday, August 29th from 12 to 3 pm at Mitchell park.
This local gathering is held in tandem with international overdose awareness day, dedicated to honoring those lost without judgment, validating the pain felt by grieving loved ones, and supporting initiatives dedicated to ending overdoses. San Luis Obispo county experienced 42 opioid-related overdose deaths in 2024, a considerable decrease from the 78 deaths recorded in 2023.
This year’s event will feature a keynote presentation by Jamie Metzgar, the director of grief support and education at Hospice SLO, talking about the grief of family members whose loved one died from an overdose. Admission is free to all interested community members.
