A shark attacked and killed a 26-year-old surfer in Monterey Bay Saturday.
The surfer customized surfboards for a living. State park officials say the man was surfing off Manresa State Beach on the northern end of Monterey Bay on Saturday when he was attacked by a shark of unknown species.
At the time, the beach was closed to visitors to prevent crowding during the coronavirus crisis, but swimming and surfing was allowed in the water.
Coroner’s officials identified the surfer as Ben Kelly, a resident of Santa Cruz county.
He was the owner operator of Ben Kelly Surfboards.
