Clear sunny skies today in the north county after some cloudiness in some areas this morning.
Meanwhile the fires continue to the north of us. Cal Fire’s Nick Truax is incident commander of the River and Carmel fires. At a news conference held last night, Truax describes that fire south of Salinas. He said it’s burned just over 48,000 acres just south of Salinas. It’s 20% contained. Eight homes have been destroyed, eight others were damaged. The Carmel fire has grown to 6,000 acres. It’s burned 25 homes. It’s now 15% contained.
The Dolan fire is being handled by the US Forest service. It’s grown to about 20,000 acres near Limekiln state park south of Big Sur. The fire is about 10% contained. A Fresno man is arrested on suspicion of starting that fire. He’s identified as 30-year-old Ivan Geronimo Gomez of Fresno. He was detained near where the fire started. Highway 1 closed north of Ragged Point.
Both fires under a red flag warning in effect until five this afternoon due to the combination of strong winds, and dry lightning.
