The first round of the baseball amateur draft last night. The Pittsburgh Pirates select Louisville catcher Henry Davis with the first pick. Davis is the best college hitter in the draft. He hit 370 with 15 home runs. More walks than strikeouts.
The second player selected, pitcher Jack Leiter of Vanderbilt. He went to the Texas Rangers. His dad Al Leiter pitched 19 seasons in the Majors.
Number three was a high school pitcher out of Oklahoma, Jackson Jobe. Jackson’s dad is a PGA golfer. Jackson was 9-0 this year with a 0.13 ERA.
The first pick in the draft has a slot value of $8.4 million dollars.
The Nigerian basketball team beats Team USA as they each prepare for the Olympic games. The final score over the weekend, 90-87.
Five years ago in an exhibition game, Team USA beat Nigeria by 43 points. This Nigerian team has seven current NBA players. Team USA started five all NBA players, but they had only practiced with each other for several days. The Nigerians have been practicing together for two weeks.
Since professionals started playing in the Olympics, Team USA has a record of 54-3. That third loss coming over the weekend to Nigeria.
Although he was not selected for Team USA, former Cal Poly standout David Nwaba has Nigerian parents. Nwaba plays for the Houston Rockets. David was born in LA. His sister, Barbara competed as a heptathlete in the 2016 Olympic games. She graduated from UC Santa Barbara.
