Although initially not slated to fully reopen until March, Caltrans announced that repairs on highway 1 at Big Sur have progressed enough for a reopening.
In January 2023, the area experienced significant rain and downpours that caused multiple rockslides and mudslides. On February 9, 2024, a massive rockslide buried the highway’s surface under several tons of rock and mud. Work at the highway was slow at first due to dangerous conditions, and the project faced significant challenges in clearing the debris.
The highway will reopen today at noon.
The estimated repair cost for the area was $82.6 million.
