A northern Chumash tribe will conduct a cultural burn next week at the Miossi open space near the base of the Cuesta grade.
The county air pollution control district says community members can expect to see smoke near highway 101, with some related traffic delays, during the cultural burn. The burn is planned for either June 8th, 9th, or 10th, weather permitting.
If conditions for a burn are not optimal, the burns may be rescheduled. Indigenous tribes of California conduct cultural burns for the purpose of revitalizing plants, reducing wildfire risk, enhancing habitat, and broadly maintaining indigenous life-ways and ecosystems.
The Chumash tribe will receive support from Cal Fire, the San Luis Obispo county fire department, and other agencies.
