The Atascadero city council narrowly approved support for the county alliance bid on ambulance services in last night’s meeting.
Although the item was on the consent calendar, it was pulled for further discussion and questions. For 80 years, the county has not released an RFP for ambulance services, which has been handled by San Luis Ambulance.
The proposed alliance would release an RFP for the county, with the city of Paso Robles serving as the lead agency. Council-members Newsom and Peek did not support the resolution. “One of the key considerations for me is, that we’re dealing with a system where a private business has had a monopoly–a government guaranteed monopoly for 80 years.”
The item passed with a 3 – 2 vote; it does not bind the city of Atascadero in any way to a new RFP or ambulance services contract.
