San Luis Obispo county district attorney Dan Dow announced that 35-year-old Lauren Pamela Johnston of Paso Robles has been sentenced to 9 years in state prison.
The DA’s office says Johnston broke into locked and unlocked cars in late 2025, stealing purses, wallets, phones, cash, and bank cards. She pleaded no contest to all counts, according to the DA’s office. Dan Dow says this case shows the effectiveness of proposition 36; 15 of her 31 felony convictions were filed under a penal code section 666.1 for repeat thieves. Without proposition 36, these would only be misdemeanors despite the repeat actions, with up to six months in county jail each. District attorney Dan Dow said “I want to thank the voters of San Luis Obispo county and California… you gave prosecutors the tools to hold repeat thieves accountable.”
More information on the case, including a table of the thefts by the numbers, is available on the county’s website.
