Late last week, California senator Scott Wiener introduced SB 961, aimed at vehicle safety equipment.
Part of the bill would require all passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses manufactured or sold within the state to include a speed limiter system starting in 2027. The limiter would prohibit the vehicle from driving ten miles per hour above the speed limit, exempting emergency vehicles. Drivers will be able to temporary disable the limiter, according to the bill.
The second part of the bill would require large trucks and trailers to be equipped with side guards that are intended to prevent other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists from being sucked underneath the truck during a collision.
The proposed bill will go to a committee in the spring.
