Senator John Laird announced an agreement between the county of San Luis Obispo, and PG&E.
The agreement requires PG&E to provide $16 million to the county to make up for lost unitary tax payments. The county will receive two payments, one on December 31st of this year for $8.3 million, and a second at a later date. PG&E agreed to the funding after Laird introduced senate bill 931, which would have ensured funding for communities impacted by the ongoing operation of Diablo Canyon. PG&E has instead volunteered to provide the payments that would have been required under SB 931. Senator Laird said the funds will come from PG&E, not state taxpayers or utility ratepayers.
PG&E’s senior director Tom Jones said “we look forward to continuing conversations with state and local leaders… to ensure local communities and the state both benefit from this critical energy resource.”
