Representative Salud Carbajal announced $4.6 million in federal funding will go the San Luis Obispo county airport for “a range of infrastructure upgrades.”
The funds will go to modernizing the runway’s 11/29 safety system, upgrading taxiway a, and creating a plan to identify wildlife around the airport and assess how to protect aircraft from potential wildlife hazards, such as bird strikes. The funding is from the bipartisan infrastructure law’s airport infrastructure grant, which has since provided more than $1 billion in funding for projects in the central coast.
Director of airports, Courtney Johnson said “this significant federal investment in safe, reliable airport infrastructure is an investment in the long-term economic vitality, connectivity, and resilience of our region.” Carbajal’s office also cites previous funding he has secured for the SLO county airport, such as $2 million in May 2026 for an improved baggage screening system, and $2.7 million last fall for a new taxiway.
