The San Luis Obispo police department has released footage of the officer involved shooting that took place February 28th.
Officers are seen in the video responding to the scene at just about 4:50 pm, arriving at the location at 4:54 pm. In the video, police find the suspect near the intersection of Poinsettia street and Bluebell way. As the first officer steps out of the vehicle, the suspect is seen dropping to one knee, and pointing what appears to be a gun at the officer. The officer then yells at the suspect: “Hey, stop, stop, stop!” The officer then fires a single shot from his rifle at the suspect, who immediately falls to the ground.
The suspect has been identified as 69-year-old Willie Felton Foster Jr., and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The gun was later discovered to be a replica.
The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave as the department of justice continues to investigate this incident. The police department also says that at least one 911 caller who knew Foster said he believed the firearm was a toy gun, which came about one minute before Foster was shot.
