09.02.26 Hwy 1 Closure Timber and Plaskett Fire
Efforts to contain the Plaskett and Timber fire in Big Sur continue, with some progress being made on the Plaskett fire’s containment.
Yesterday morning, containment was at 1% with over 29,000 acres; that has jumped to 19% as of this morning. Meanwhile the Timber fire, which ignited on August 8th and has burned through 25,000 acres, is at 23% containment. Cal Fire cites steep, rugged terrain as a challenging factor in containing the two fires.
Earlier this week, a segment of highway 1’s closure was lifted. The northern closure from post mile 56 just south of Little Sur to post mile 45 just south of Big Sur post office will reopen. The southern closure supporting the Plaskett fire’s emergency response remains in place at the San Luis Obispo/Monterey county line.
The SLO county air pollution control district cites better air quality, with the exception of Cambria, as smoke moves into the pacific ocean. However, as it drifts down the coast and inland, periods of increasing smoke should be expected in Cambria, Cayucos, and Morro Bay.
