Following the recent storms on Christmas, and the upcoming rainy forecast for this week, remember to avoid contact with ocean water during and after rainstorms.
This advice comes from the county public health department, advising to avoid contact for at least three days following significant rainstorms. Rainstorm runoff can carry high levels of disease-causing organisms such as bacteria. This can cause skin, respiratory, and intestinal problems. Contact with this runoff while swimming or surfing may increase the risk for certain types of illnesses.
Anyone who has contact with ocean water during a rain advisory should monitor for symptoms such as rashes, fever, chills, ear infections, vomiting, and diarrhea, and contact their doctor of symptoms persist or are moderate to severe.
