On Tuesday’s county board of supervisors meeting, the board adopted a resolution, opposing new offshore oil and gas development.
They also approved a formal letter to the Trump administration expressing opposition to new leases, and voted to join the local government outer continental shelf coalition.
A release by the county says that in recent months, the Trump administration has taken significant actions to expand offshore oil and gas leasing, with up to six new lease sales off the northern, central, and southern California coast proposed between 2027 and 2030.
The resolution approved by the board reaffirms county policies that prioritize coastal protection, public health, and quality of life. Supervisor Jimmy Paulding said: “Our region has seen firsthand the environmental and economic devastation that can result from offshore oil development… from the long term impacts of the Guadalupe oil field and Avila beach contamination.”
The resolution was approved 3 – 2, with supervisors Peschong and Moreno in opposition.
