A fire broke out Monday morning at a homeless encampment under the east end of the Highway 41 Bridge over the Salinas River in Atascadero. The CHP closed the bridge for about about an hour so that Cal Trans inspectors could ascertain if the fire compromised the integrity of the bridge.
The small fire under the bridge was started around 8:30-9:00 Monday morning. It burned the belongings of the homeless people who camped at the site. It did not spread to nearby vegetation.
After a thorough inspection of the site by Cal Trans officials, they determined there was no structural damage and reopened the 41 Bridge over the Salinas River before noon.
