Tonight, the Paso Robles school board is expected to choose between two options for utilizing elementary schools.
Option A would move the dual immersion program from Georgia Brown to Speck. When Georgia Brown is renovated in a few years, Speck students will make that their new home.
That’s option A. Option B is the status quo.
Speck students go back to Speck. Georgia Brown students stay at Georgia Brown, which will be renovated.
At the study session Saturday, trustee Tim Gearhardt raised questions about how Speck students are being treated. He said they’ve been attending school in portables for several years, and if Option A is adopted, they’ll spend at least another two years in portables.
Parents and community members also spoke up. City council woman Maria Elena Garcia also addressed the school board Saturday. She said the school district needs to base their decision in part on the declining student population in the district.
For instance, in the Chandler Ranch Development which includes about 1300 homes, they initially predicted three children per household. Now they’re projecting 0.3 children per household. Enrollment is going to continue to decline in the school district.
Tonight the board is expected to choose between Option A and Option B.
