Earlier this year, two groups of local fishermen filed a lawsuit against the state of California’s wind energy plans, reporting a significant reduction in catch numbers since wind surveys began.
There are plans to use sites off the coast of Morro Bay to install wind energy farms. On April 19th, Norwegian state-owned energy company Equinor, began sonar survey work on their vessel, Island Pride. Commercial fishermen have since then reported about a 67 to 70% reduction in catch numbers.
They are seeking a preliminary injunction against Equinor, citing that the company has not followed senate bill 286 to include best practices for addressing impacts to commercial and recreational fisheries regarding wind energy.
San Luis Obispo superior court judge Craig Van Rooyen has found this to be a proper case, and a hearing is scheduled for May 15th.
