The Integrated Waste Management board of directors meets this afternoon at the supervisors council chambers. The board will discuss a proposal to approve an new ordinance establishing a waste reduction and reuse program for carryout bags. It would prohibit plastic carry out plastic bags, including single use and reusable bags at point-of-sale establishments. That includes grocery and convenience stores, pharmacies, restaurants, farmers markets and similar establishments. Customers may be offered a paper bag alternative for a fee set by the IWMA board. That fee would be greater than ten cents.
The ordinance would prohibit the use of plastic produce bags and dry-cleaning (‘garment’ bags). Meat bags are prohibited, but butcher paper may be offered as an alternative. Newspaper bags are prohibited, except during rainy weather.
The Integrated Waste Management board meets at 1:30 this afternoon at the supervisors chambers in the county government center. The board includes one representative from each city in the county, and all five supervisors.
The petition to ban all plastic carryout bags only gathered 337 signatures. Here is the link to view the signatures gathered:
