Several thousand people turned out for the Annual Polar Bear Dip at the Cayucos pier on New Year’s Day. More than one thousand people took a dip in the ocean. There was also an Avila Beach Polar Bear Plunge. That Avila Beach event is now in it’s 11th year.
More than 4,250 gallons of sewage were released in the ocean near Avila Beach on New Year’s Eve. That was caused by a sewage line blockage. The spill started around 5 Saturday afternoon and was stopped at 6:25. Part of Avila Beach was closed on New Year’s day because of that sewage leak.
A couple earthquakes shook the Pinnacles National Park Saturday. The first struck at 10:19 Saturday night. It measured 3.2 on the Richter scale. New Years day turned violent in Nipomo when a family dispute erupted shortly after midnight. Sheriff’s deputies found a 36-year-old man with stab wounds after a family disturbance. 20-year-old Angel Rodriguez was arrested for stabbing the victim. Despite the rain Saturday, a big turn out for the Stacie Strong Golf Tournament at the Links golf course. Stacie Athon is battling cancer, and the tournament was organized to help defray her medical expenses. She tells KPRL the event went well. Paso Robles city council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month, but not tonight. Tonight’s scheduled city council meeting canceled because of the three day weekend. Next meeting is scheduled for January 17th, which also follows a three day weekend.
