American Poet Laureate 6.20.2019

Joy Harjo is named US Poet Laureate. She’s the first Native American to hold the position. The 68-year-old poet was appointed yesterday by librarian of congress Carla Hayden, who said that Harjo will help tell the American story. Harjo is a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, and a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Reparations 6.20.2019

Yesterday, on “Juneteenth”, African-Americans testified in congress on proposed reparations to compensate for slavery and abuse for 100 years after slavery ended in the United States. Yesterday’s date, June 19th is called Juneteenth by African-Americans. Beekeepers say last winter was the worst die off yet of honeybees in the US. The annual nationwide survey found 37.7% of honeybee colonies died this past winter.
